Trigger Point Injections

UNDERSTANDING TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS FOR PAIN RELIEF

Trigger point injections (TPIs) are a valuable treatment option for patients seeking effective pain relief. This procedure is commonly used to target specific areas of painful muscles that contain trigger points, or muscle knots. Trigger points occur when muscles struggle to relax properly and can be felt beneath the skin. By addressing these trigger points, TPI can provide relief and prevent the aggravation of nearby nerves, reducing referred pain experienced in other parts of the body.

USES OF TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS

TPIs are commonly used to treat various muscle groups, with a focus on areas such as the neck, lower back, legs, and arms. They have also shown effectiveness in addressing tension headaches and fibromyalgia. Additionally, TPI may be used as an alternative approach for myofascial pain syndrome that does not respond to other treatments, although further research is needed to determine its overall efficacy.

THE PROCEDURE: HOW TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS ARE PERFORMED

During a trigger point injection, a small needle is skillfully inserted into the patient’s muscle trigger point. The injection typically consists of saline, a local anesthetic, and sometimes a corticosteroid. By administering the injection, the trigger point becomes inactive, resulting in pain relief. Multiple trigger points can be injected during a single visit, and a short series of treatments can often provide lasting relief. The procedure is quick, taking only a few minutes, and can be performed in a doctor’s office. In cases where a patient has allergies to specific medications, a dry-needle approach without any medication can be used instead.

TPIs are typically performed in a doctor’s office, with the patient seated or lying face down on the examination table. The administering doctor will locate the trigger point and mark the site, often without the need for ultrasound guidance. The TPI site is cleansed with alcohol or a similar skin cleanser for cleanliness. Ethyl chloride is used to numb the skin and minimize discomfort during the injection. If tenderness or soreness occurs at the injection site, applying ice, heat, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil can help alleviate symptoms.
